This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the 1^st ever Carpet Blaque Runway Fashion Show and Fundraiser in Brooklyn New York at Causey Contemporary Art Gallery put on by Sean Sinclair of the Noren Group.

This event had a lot of backbone. Concepts were fabulous and attendance was on point. Sean Sinclair is a new comer to the event planning and organization world. The effort put forth to pull off an event of this magnitude was visible in the many facets of the event itself. Held in the urban contemporary art gallery Causey Contemporary, Mr. Sinclair had the perfect venue and back drop to pull the concept of art meets fashion off. I enjoyed the live music and give extra credit for the diverse genre selection of the performers. The fashion component was achieved through still modeling on the floor in the same space as attendees. This was a dramatic affect.

I believe that if Mr. Sinclair continues this event in the future he will benefit from this first experience and be able to improve upon this year’s event. My number one suggestion would be to shorten the time of the event. 6pm-11pm was a little too long to fully hold the attention of your audience. I would suggest starting later and ending sooner. I would also suggest a dress code for the staff so they are easily identified.

Sean is a personal friend of mine and I am extremely impressed by his concept and diversity. I will be coming from Virginia for the next one. Congrats on a job well done.

I had the opportunity in my schedule last week to tune in for the last three episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Talk Show. Listening to Ms. Winfrey thank the people who inspired her and inspire the people who where tuning in and listening to her lit a sense of urgency in my steps and ordered me to write the next blog in my series P.U.S.H a little early.

So, we are talking about embracing success. When I speak about success I am talking about your success, your success as you see it. The goals you want to carry out, the accomplishments you would like to look back on. As a life and business success coach, I come across motivated people every day. They are motivated to get up and do something with themselves. But, most of these people do not go into a task with the expectation of success. They do not have the notion that completing what they set out to do will somehow reward them with success that can not be measured by others. My definition of success is being blessed with tools I need and the people I need to get where I am suppose to be. I believe that if I start with positive energy and maintain that course I will receive that same positive energy in my life. I expect this! So if I put positive energy into something and I get an abrupt or negative response out of the effort, my mind is confused. My brain will freeze. I really have no idea how to process that situation. And let me tell you, it is an act against nature so it does not happen very often if at all in anyone's life.

In the spirit of talking about Embracing Success, lets talk about you willingness to except you are worthy of it. See this is were Ms. Oprah played my strings on her finale show. I have been looking for years at what makes my clients fail when they are set up to succeed. I have seen time and time again where they sabotage their own efforts by not showing up, not listening, not following through on a promise. I have seen them throw up their hands just when the bank is about to make the loan or an investor wants to give them what they need to get to the next level. I have always thought, well maybe they just were not ready. Oprah gave me my answer when she referenced a moment with Iyanla Vanzant. Iynala said that she was not able to receive what Oprah was trying to give her because she did not know how. Wow! And then it struck me. So many people that I had crossed paths with in life were not able to receive the opportunity of success because they did not know how.

How do you receive the opportunity of success in you life, in you business or from a stranger? I believe knowing God put you here on this planet to receive success is a start. Embracing the possibility that someone else is going to be there for you, to help you and pick you up because that is the divine order of things is a hard pill to swallow. But it is necessary if you are going to get your mind right. It is necessary if you are going to share a bit of yourself so you can get a bit of the world given to you. Knowing this one rule will aide you in accepting success. You are worthy of success because the universe is designed in a way that everyone will achieve their own level of success.

Also, prepare your life for success. Do not allow success to come knocking on the door and you are not ready. Getting your house in order not only prepares you for success showing up but it also creates a space in your soul that tells you everyday you are winning, you are going to receive success from your labor. I do not care if it is your finances, the people you call friends, your family or simply your desk at work. Walk in your success everyday as if it has already been delivered because guess what, it has?

Do not do it unless you want to do it. Not everyone is able to do the thing they really want to do and make money at it. I know that. I am actually one of the few that wakes up every day and is rewarded with a career where I get to do exactly what I want to do for a living and provide for my family. That is not what I am talking about here. What I am talking about is success and success comes in all forms. If you love to write books, write... if you love to play basketball, play.... if you love to read, read... and if you love to sing, sing out loud. The point is never to write a book, dribble a ball, read to a class or sing out loud if you do not expect for someone to pay attention and you are not ready to embrace the success.

So thanks Oprah.... this one came really easy!

I started thinking about the Push Through campaign a few months ago when working with a new client. During our business assessment, I realized that she had a lot of great ideas. She had done her homework to make sure her business plan was sustainable but she kept 2^nd guessing herself. 2nd guessing drives me crazy! One day I told her ‘give the world your vision without hesitation.’ Upon saying it out loud, I realized it was something that a vast majority of the people I dealt with on both a person and professional level needed to embrace. It was something that I needed to hear. And so the PUSH campaign was founded.

Over the next few weeks we are going to discuss each aspect to see how PUSH can help us become more motivated and more complete. We want to focus on the opportunity challenges bring and learn how to overcome those obstacles by identifying and taking away their power.

Definition of Potential: capable of being or becoming... possible.

We all have potential. We have those talents we were born with and we have the ability to learn and create other opportunities for development. Isn't it funny how most people never actually elevate to their full potential, most ideas only scratch the surface of possibility? I say, always seek the potential in everything and everyone you come in contact with because most often it is hidden.

I am not sure what it is about life that jades us into believing that we need more then our brains and hands to move mountains. As children we move with swiftness and resolve.  No force on earth can stop a child from accomplishing what they want to do. Most children are stubborn yet resilient. Somewhere between 7 years old and 19-22 years old our fears of failure get in the way to the point where we will not even try to pursue our dreams.

Here is the thing about failure that most do not even recognize. Failure is a set up for opportunity and opportunity is a set up for success. In every failed attempt we create an opportunity for education and self education is the breath of success. Finding your way in life, whether business or personal is all about finding what is possible and then creating an action. This is potential.

What makes you any different from the rest? That is what you must ask yourself everyday you are able to plant your feet on solid ground. Why should you get the business, the job, the partner, the raise or the reward? As a business success coach I think it is the most important element of career planning. As a life coach, I think it is the most important element of daily living.

Uniqueness is defined as being the only one, solo.

When starting a new business it is important to answer all the main questions up front. Who is the business, what does the business sell, how does the business make money, when is the right time to open the business, where are the competitors? It is a must that in one of these you find a difference that will set you apart from your competition. A difference is what will propel you to stardom and give you a winning edge on the nearest man or women standing.

My Story,

I started consulting services many years ago when I found success in another business I owed. Friends and family started asking me for my advice with regard to their business ideas. One day, I decided that I liked helping them a lot more then what I was doing and business consultation and coaching was born. One of the first things I did was research the industry. I looked at the market standards as well as I looked at who was doing what. I looked at my strengths in business and I matched them up with services I could provide to people who had businesses or people who wanted to start businesses. I figured out quickly what I could offer, but I think even more importantly, I figured out what I could not offer. I decided to keep my business boutique in style. I decided then that the difference between my business and the rest would be my goal of staying small and providing unique personal service to my business clients. And all though I have worked with some large companies, I have managed to keep our business on a personal boutique level.

Another lesson I must teach here is having uniqueness can run you straight out of business. As in life, we learn the lessons of our ancestors; in business we should use this same technique. This is what I know; being unique does not require us to move to the left of all principles and stumbles of those that have come before us. Uniqueness is finding that edge that makes you special in what you do, what your vision is. Do not fall into the same marketing, budgeting or branding pitfalls that others have fallen to. Do your research. My advice, find a business owner in the same industry that has been successful and offer to buy them a cup of coffee. Likewise, find a person that tried and failed. The key here is to take them out for coffee too.

Find your uniqueness in business and in life, put your mark on it and then tell every body!

So, you have opened your business. You started with a solid business plan followed by strategic planning to deliver your product or services to your well researched demographic. You have sized up your competition and ramped up your social media presence. Your website is basic but online. Your doors are open. Now what you might ask? My answer would be, it is time to look into the future. As a small business consultant I would advise you of all these basic steps previuosly mentioned. I might even throw in some processes to make life easier for you with new automation tools.

Once you get up and running we would sit down to discuss your media plan. Why do I need a media plan; that is what most small business owners ask me? I am not a personality or a fortune 500 company. We do not have executives that create Youtube videos. And if this were 2002, I might have agreed with you. In today’s online culture and with the guarantee of tomorrow’s new media revolution, it is vital for every business type to consider this way of marketing and advertising. Now, let me be clear, in no way do I believe there is a blanket way of marketing for any and every business or industry. But take the time to look at your services or products and see if a strategy can be created to get you in front of more people online who are receiving their information through new media channels.

The great thing about new media is that is opens up a world of opportunity for those who did not have it before. Traditionally, the only way to broadcast your products/services was through network or cable broadcast, radio or print. Sometimes the cost associated with these traditional forms priced small businesses right out of the market. Even something as little as a yellow page listing could cost a small business owner hundreds if not thousands of dollars per month. Now buying advertising is not the only channel to creating an effective marketing plan. We can talk about online directories, social media, referral marketing and internet marketing but let us focus on new media marketing today.

Our definition of new media is the vessel by which the public receives their entertainment, news, sports and so on. With the introduction of sites like Hulu and Justin TV , on demand online programming is the way of the future. So you might ask how a small business owner can take advantage of this new source. Marketing and advertising are the name of the game. For example, we signed a new client last month and currently we are working with them on business plan development. With in that strategy we are talking about possible ways to create an online TV show that would speak to their industry and potential client. Until the client talked to us their only source of revenue was what they could manage in product sales. They had never thought to increase their reach by creating an online culture that targeted their clients need for the product.

Another way to take advantage of the new media revolution is to advertise online with sites that represent the on demand platform we are becoming all to familiar with using such as YouTube. The cost associated with online new media advertising is much more in reach, from a budgetary stand point, for small businesses then traditional advertising. Advertising on a website that attracts visitors and viewers that fit your target market, turn into dollars on your bottom line. Becoming a part of an affiliate marketing program is also a cost efficient way of branding your company and getting in front of a specific audience.

In conclusion, new media is the vessel of the future of marketing and advertising for small business owners; it is up to you today to take advantage of the tools becoming available for tomorrow.

New Media- My Take on the Revolutionary Change

We are apart of your future at Urban Media TV.  We believe that the way entertainment is delivered is in a state of evolution. Like the transfer from radio to television, slowly television is becoming less vital in our everyday lives. New media is taking over and people are migrating. At UMTV we are building a communications device that exploits this change and embraces the opportunity.

So what is new media? Most experts site new media as a term to combine traditional media such as film, images, spoken /written word and music with the power of the computer and more specifically the Internet. My definition is simple, new media is the vessel and format by which we receive our entertainment and it is forever changing.

In today’s society we want what we want, when we want it and in its simplest form. That is exactly what new media promises to deliver. Whether it be movies, news, talk shows or music videos in the very near future, conceivably when you sit down to your TV for entertainment, you will turn it on and tune into what you want on the broadcasting channel of your choice brought to your through your internet. You will see your favorite episode of Law & Order through your Internet via your 50" digital plasma TV at any time that is convenient to you. Ted Turner brought us the news 24 hours a day in the early 80’s. At that time people were use to programming that told us when and where. Now the programming is in the viewers hands.

Traditional networks are investing millions of dollars into their online content. Forecasters tell them that network programming is a dinosaur way of delivering entertainment to their end user. Their viewer will be utilizing new media platforms that include short programming, viral marketing, mobile application services and on demand capability. The rush to become the leader in the industry is on..

I think the most important item to note in this new media revolution is the fact that new media gives a voice to the voiceless. In traditional media, as a producer or artist, you had to have an in, a contact to get your message out. The power was in the hands of the network executives that made the decision. New media affords us the opportunity of independent development. Today technology allows affordable production though your laptop. Not only does it open the market of creators, it broadens the restrictive lines of network broadcasting areas. The internet is open to people across the world. It affords everyday people like you and me the online platform to deliver our creative content with one stamp of approval, our viewers!

Black Love Day is a celebration of the unity and love within the black community. Black Love Day, February 13th, was founded by native Washingtonian Ayo Handy Kendi in 1993. Ayo Handy Kendi is founder and director of the African American Holiday Association (AAHA).

The Theme of Black Love Day 2011: "Tolerence Through Unconditional Love"

There are 3 spritiual goals centered around Black Love Day

Black Self Love
Increased PEACE to stop volience
Racial Healing to Shed Racism

The African Adinkra symbol "Akoma" termed "valentine" or "heart" is a symbol of patience, goodwill, faithfulness, endurance and tolerance.

So what should we be doing on Black Love Day?

FIVE Tenets or Specific ACTS....

We should display the " Akoma" symbol speaking love, patience, goodwill and endurance into our lives
We should greet with " Nya Akoma" meaning, get a heart; be patient.
We should celebrate unity, love and relationships with ceromony
We should recycle wealth within our communities by purchasing from black merchants and service providers
We should pledge to our future by investing in the education of our children in our history and selfworth

Black Love Day is new to me. I was introduced to the concept of the day by a dear friend just a few days ago. I wondered how many people in the black community were actually aware this holiday exsisted. I found out that alot of us do not celebrate and are not aware of this day set aside. In my personal life, I celebrate black love, self love everyday. I teach my children to love themselves and take pride in who they are and where they come from everyday. I believe this is playing it forward. Planting a seed into the future. Everyday is Black Love Day.
